What To Expect During Your First Martial Arts Class.

Interior of our Martial Arts School in Cheyenne, WY
Our Martial Arts School!

Introduction

Perhaps you found this post while browsing our website, or it was emailed to you after you signed up for a free trial class. Either way, you want to know what to expect. So, I will break it down in a "timeline" order. After reading this, you will know what to expect before you leave the house, upon arrival, just before class starts, during class, and after class.

If you haven't signed up for a class yet, please do as much research as possible. Martial arts isn't like most hobbies. It isn't always fun. Your child or you yourself will not want to show up every day. It is a lot of work for the student and the family. We give everyone a free week. That is four free classes and a free private lesson! If that is too much to commit to, don't sign up for a class, just come in during a class and watch.

Before Class

Clothes

I know what you are thinking. "What does one wear for such an occasion?" Don't worry, you don't need to wear those silly pajamas (Yet!). Just wear some workout clothes. We want to avoid three things: 1) Mat burn (Carpet burn but on a mat), 2) Awkward moments, and 3) Discomfort.

For men, I recommend wearing sweatpants or joggers and a t-shirt. You can wear gym shorts, but you might get some mat burn. I recommend women wear sweatpants/joggers or leggings and a t-shirt. Please don't wear a tank top, you will be doing push-ups and grappling. If you are unsure, remember our three goals. 1) Avoid mat burn, 2) Avoid awkwardness, and 3) Avoid discomfort.

If you decide to sign up for a membership, we will get you your own set of cool pajamas, also known as a "Gi"!

Saftey

Martial arts is a dangerous hobby, so to avoid as many injuries as possible, I would recommend doing a few things. 1) cut finger and toenails. When wrestling and sparring, those nails will cut people or yourself, not fun. 2) Jewelry, it is very possible that while or are grappling, those beautiful earrings get ripped out, not fun. Either remove them, but if you can't, just tape over them to avoid them getting caught on someone's gi.

3) Don't wear shoes on the mat, and wear flip-flops or wipe your feet before stepping on the mat. Because our school wrestles, there is a possibility of skin infections. So we ask you to wear flip-flops off the mat or wipe your feet on the disinfecting towels before stepping on the mat. We also clean the mat regularly. We have never had any outbreaks and would like to keep it that way.

I'm On The Way!

Our address is "6002 US-30 d2." Go to our home page, which has a Google Maps plug-in. Or, click here to be rerouted to our Google Maps page. We are the very last door in the row of blue buildings on Highway 30. In between the apartments and a large dirt lot.

I Have Arrived

Hello

A staff member will greet you at the door and ask you to find a seat.

Waiver

Of course, we will have you sign a waiver.

No Man Left Behind

An instructor will have one of the students help you or your child before and during class. This helps you or your child make friends. And, teaches our students how to socialize with new people while also learning leadership skills. We will also loan you any gear you will need to participate in class, like a jump rope.

Class

Sales Pitch

During the class, no instructor will bother you. Why? Good question! We understand martial arts is not for everyone. It's hard on families and kids. It's not like joining Little League. It is hard. Some days your kid will hate it, some times they will love it, and that will wear on parents. For adult students, it is hard physically because it is a very demanding hobby. And, it is hard mentally because we are teaching you very complex moves and then asking you to do them effortlessly.

So, if you or your family wants something fun and easy, I cannot recommend any martial arts. However, if you want a challenge, if you want to develop yourself physically and mentally yourself or your child, and want to be surrounded by people who want to do the same. Martial arts is for you.

End of Class

This is the only point an instructor will come up to you, unless you ask. They will simply ask if you have any questions. Yes, that is it. There will be no "Sign up now". Once again, martial arts isn't for everybody, so we will avoid pressuring you to make a decision. If you decide to continue with your free week, only then will we discuss membership and price (unless you ask first).

Thank You!

Whether you read this post and never sign up, try one class and never show up for a second, or sign up and get your black belt. Thank You! I want to spread the beauty of martial arts with as many people as possible. And, you have taken time out of your day to let me share my passion. Thank you!
