In this series, I break down some of the reasons why people should take martial arts or learn how to fight. Today we will look at “Confidence” and how martial arts can help or hinder one's confidence.
The Positives
Martial arts gives you a sense of power no matter what age you are. It feels like a superpower. When I started learning submission grappling and kickboxing in high school, I remember walking down the halls realizing that I could beat up most of the people I walked by. We humans are born much earlier than most other mammals because of our large heads. This means that we are also very vulnerable to predators as a baby.
Most mammals can walk only hours or weeks after being born but we can take a month to simply hold our own heads up. This leads to a deep helplessness in children and adults. And martial arts can help with that. If you can handle yourself against “predators” you will feel safer and more confident as a human being. Even if that is simply walking down the halls of a high school.
Negatives
There is only one problem most people don’t know what Techniques work and what does not. So many people take traditional martial arts or watch some videos and think that they can defend themselves. Or the absolute worst is the soccer mom who buys a Taser or gun. Drops it into her purse and thinks that she is now safe.
You must train, and that training must be good. You must do some kind of sparring and training with the weapon you bought or with the martial art you do otherwise you do not know the efficacy of the weapon, martial art, or techniques. If you walk around with confidence based on bad data, then you might end up getting hurt.
My Goal
My goal as a martial arts instructor is to teach the techniques that do work and ensure that my students do not have false confidence but have sparred with weapons or without, so they have confidence that is true and based within reality.
