Learn to Fight: Understanding Violence

Updated: Jan 29

Unless you grew up in a very violent place you, most likely, do not understand the real consequences of violence. Bloody knuckles, broken hands, cuts on your face, weapons, et cetera. In this installment of “Learn to Fight” we will explore how martial arts can help you understand this violence.

The Beginning

If you join a martial arts school, combat sport, or a self-defense course that has a “pressure testing” aspect. You can understand how dangerous being in a fight can be even if you are trained and a competent fighter. There is always a chance you get caught with a stray punch, a weapon is drawn, or another person jumps into the fight. Simply sparring can help give you some perspective, however, it is not a real fight so it will not give a full or fleshed-out picture. But, you will have at least a low-resolution idea of what could happen to you in a real fight.

None Violence

Sometimes there is a good reason to get into a fight and sometimes it is best to walk away. Now, I’m not the kind of martial artist to say, “Never fight!”. However, I have seen a trend of people becoming less willing to fight because of learning martial arts. Understanding violence convinces you to avoid violence if possible. I have felt this myself, as a young 20yr I have an ego and a desire to get in fights, but since doing a lot of sparring I do not feel the need to soothe my ego or prove my manliness. I have done that on the mats so why would I need to do it on the street with a drunk fool?

Conclusion

Learning to fight will teach you the real implications and consequences of getting into a fight. Which intern will convince you to avoid fighting, and not because someone told you not to fight but because you understand the consequences of being in a fight.
