Learn to Fight 3: Get Rid of Delusion

Updated: Jan 29

In this series, I break down some of the reasons why people should take martial arts or learn how to fight. Today we will go over how learning to fight will get rid of delusion. Everyone is ignorant of something, but when it comes to violence and fighting people's ignorance reaches a whole new level.

The Delusion

According to YouGov a data-collecting site, “6% of Americans think they could beat a grizzly bear in a fight”. This should be 0%, but it is not. Most people (especially men) believe they know how to fight. I can tell you from personal experience that most people do not know how to fight.

Fighting is a natural part of life. We fight to get out of bed. We fight with friends and family. Any time you are making a decision you are fighting. This and multiple other psychological reasons lead to an assumption that one can fight. These people might say, “If I see red, it's on man”, “I'm a Momma bear, and I will protect people”. Do not get it twisted; these people do believe in a self-defense situation they would be capable of fighting effectively. If you want all you must do is look up “dojo storms” to see average people challenge half-decent fighters.

The Solution

The solution is very simple, although not very easy. All you must do is find a martial arts gym that does kickboxing sparring or jujitsu rolling. Take a couple of classes and then participate in the sparring or rolling. You will find out whether you can fight. Then all you must do is keep going to martial arts classes and become a competent fighter. When you are competent you can walk around with the confidence that you can handle yourself in a fight (Assuming that there are no extenuating circumstances).
